Plymouth has reached a significant milestone with the completion of a crucial phase at Millbay Docks, marking the first of several upgrades funded by the UK Government under the Plymouth and South Devon Freeport seed capital programme.
The West Wharf strengthening project, which began in December 2023, is a pivotal element of Associated British Ports' (ABP) £23 million investment to enhance infrastructure at Millbay. This upgrade will ensure the long-term viability of the Ferry Terminal, bolster the port’s freight capabilities, improve its environmental performance, and expand its appeal to the cruise market.
The recent improvements involved the installation of 30 steel tubular piles, resulting in a 60-metre section of the Wharf now capable of supporting 100-tonne cranes. This enhancement significantly boosts the berth's load capacity, allowing the port to handle more cargo and support a new state-of-the-art Passenger Boarding Bridge for both ferry and cruise passengers.
Looking ahead, the next phase will see the installation of the Passenger Boarding Bridge, provided by Adelte, which will streamline the boarding process for foot passengers of Brittany Ferries and cruise ships. Additional upgrades include refurbishing the passenger terminal and implementing traffic management measures to expedite processing times for inbound traffic.
Ashley Curnow, ABP’s Divisional Port Manager for Wales and the Southwest, commented:
“We are pleased with the progress at Millbay Docks, which will facilitate increased freight and trade, supporting Plymouth’s broader economy. These improvements will enhance the passenger experience for Brittany Ferries and open new opportunities for the cruise business. This infrastructure upgrade highlights ABP’s dedication to growth and sustainability at Millbay Docks. We appreciate the local community’s patience and support throughout the process.”
Millbay Docks has long been a crucial hub for Brittany Ferries, offering daily services to Roscoff in France and weekly services to Santander in Spain. Steve Lawrie, Port Operations Manager for Brittany Ferries Plymouth, noted:
“The strengthened West Wharf and the new boarding bridge will greatly enhance the travel experience for our passengers, particularly those traveling on foot. This upgrade aligns with our goal of providing seamless and enjoyable travel experiences and reflects our ongoing partnership with ABP at Millbay Docks.”
Richard May, CEO of Plymouth and South Devon Freeport, added: “
It’s exciting to see this project completed with Freeport seed capital funding. This infrastructure upgrade will allow ABP to optimize port operations, increase ship rotations, and explore new routes as part of the Plymouth and South Devon Freeport.”
Plymouth City Council Leader Tudor Evans remarked:
“This milestone is a significant step in our goal to boost global trade through our ports. The Freeport seed funding has strengthened the wharf at Millbay, unlocking potential for increased freight and an improved experience for ferry passengers. This development will lead to more ships, cargo, and business growth for Plymouth.”
The project, executed by Teignmouth Marine Services Ltd. (TMS) and overseen by Mace Group, is set to be completed by March 2025. TMS’s expertise in marine contracting and civil engineering, along with Mace’s consultancy and construction support, has been crucial in ensuring the successful delivery of these upgrades.
Will Robertson, Ports and Maritime Lead at Mace, emphasized:
“The port industry is vital to Plymouth and the wider UK economy. Our expertise has ensured the successful completion of these essential upgrades, enhancing Millbay Docks’ infrastructure to support its role as a key freight and cruise terminal.”
The Port of Plymouth continues to thrive, with cruise ship arrivals to the city doubling compared to two years ago. This growth is contributing to Plymouth’s reputation as a premier destination for international travellers.
