Plymouth Sound is one of the oldest continually studied marine areas on earth and is globally recognised for the strength of its marine science and technology.

Marine Autonomy

Plymouth and its surrounding area boast a rich ecosystem of marine autonomous research, private sector businesses, and world-renowned research capabilities.

The industry predicts a global marine autonomy market worth £103 billion by 2030, with the UK adopting a 10 per cent market share. Investing further in Plymouth's existing hub for testing and developing marine autonomy will enable UK PLC to build sovereign capabilities and secure a significant share in this growing market, particularly in the fields of defence, renewables, and oil and gas.

Sheltered by the natural harbour of Plymouth Sound and two breakwaters, the city is home to the most comprehensive shore side marine offering in the South West.
