In late January we hosted Plymouth’s very first LEGO League at the Market Hall – a fantastic, jam-packed day of activities using LEGO and robotics to engage six secondary schools from across Plymouth in STEAM.
Before the event, each participating school led sessions in school to build their very own LEGO robot which they then brought to the league. On competition day, they were put to the challenge as the children were tasked with programming the robots to respond to light and sound sensors on a challenge mat developing problem solving techniques, teamwork and robotics and engineering skills. Competing in their school teams, the children programmed their robots to perform specific actions to score as many points as possible. The busy day ended with a fantastic awards ceremony in the Market Hall immersive dome.
Due to the overwhelming success of the event and the positive feedback they received, Real Ideas have since developed their own weekly Real Ideas Junior Tech Club - Lego Robotics which will take place every Saturday morning at the Market Hall. The club will allow children to explore robotics, engineering, programming, and other soft skills such as problem solving and teamwork in an accessible, exciting way. The first block of clubs will launch in early March 2021 aimed at 7–12-year-olds, with sessions for different age groups to be introduced in the coming months.
This activity is part of the iMayflower project and has been supported by The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, who fund the Cultural Development Fund, which is administered by Arts Council England.
