Plymouth Arts Cinema welcomes Paul Brookes as new Board Chair as Andrew Brewerton steps down

Date

The Board of Directors of Plymouth Arts Cinema announces the appointment of Paul Brookes as new Board Chair, effective as of October 7 2021. Paul Brookes was Chief Executive of The Box/Plymouth Museum from 2014 until 2021, presiding over the opening of Plymouth’s £47m cultural attraction The Box in 2020.

Paul Brookes said, “I am delighted to be appointed as Chair of Plymouth Arts Cinema. I would like to thank Andrew for everything he has achieved, leading a great team through a very challenging period of transition from Plymouth Arts Centre to the Arts Cinema, with the move from Looe Street to a venue within the College of Art, and then the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. I will look forward to helping the Arts Cinema to continue to be an important part of the city’s cultural regeneration.”

Plymouth Arts Cinema will bid farewell to Andrew Brewerton, who will step down as Chair after a decade. Brewerton steered with unyielding commitment and a steady hand during a turbulent period, enabling the organisation to make the transition from Plymouth Arts Centre to Plymouth Arts Cinema, and moving from its original Looe Street location to a new, purpose-built independent cinema at Plymouth College of Art.

Prof. Brewerton stepped down from his position as Principal & Chief Executive of Plymouth College of Art this year, after 11 years of service to the independent art school.

Andrew Brewerton said “It has been a huge privilege to work over a decade with Anna and the team at Plymouth Arts Cinema - the home address for independent film in Plymouth - and indeed with the extraordinary legacy that Plymouth Arts Centre bequeathed to the arts and cultural landscape of the city, without which the contemporary profile of the visual arts might not have evolved. I am forever grateful to staff and trustees past and present for their support and commitment, and delighted with Paul Brookes‘ appointment. His leadership will take the Trust forward with new energy and confidence.”

Plymouth Arts Cinema screens new independent cinema from all around the world, as well as classics and mainstream releases, and community screenings, festivals, events, and special guests from the film industry.
