Business Spotlight: Barbican Theatre Plymouth

Date

The Invest Plymouth Team recently sat down with Claire Honey to find out more about all of the amazing cultural and creative opportunities taking place right here in #BritainsOceanCity.

Barbican Theatre Plymouth is a pioneering arts organisation rooted in the heart of Plymouth. Our mission is to create spaces where people from all backgrounds can experience, participate in, and influence the arts.

From our intimate waterfront venue in Plymouth’s historic Barbican area, we deliver a vibrant programme of theatre, dance, music, and community-based projects.

We provide essential training and performance opportunities for young people and early-career artists, helping them build skills, confidence, and professional networks. Our events and activities are designed to be accessible and welcoming, showcasing a mix of local talent and nationally renowned performers. Through workshops, participatory projects, and outreach initiatives, we foster creativity and a sense of belonging for underserved groups.

How long has the Barbican Theatre been bringing creative and cultural ideas to life in Plymouth?

Barbican Theatre has been at the heart of Plymouth’s arts scene for over 40 years, championing creativity, inclusion, and new talent.

In 20 words, describe Barbican Theatre Plymouth?

A vibrant, inclusive arts organisation nurturing talent, inspiring creativity, and providing accessible cultural experiences for all in Plymouth and beyond.

What aspects of the arts and cultural sector do you specialise in?

We specialise in artist development, youth engagement, live performance, creative education, and making the arts accessible to underserved and underrepresented communities.

Who is your primary audience, and do you reach beyond Plymouth or the South West?

Our primary audience includes young people (15-25), emerging and early-career artists, and local residents, but our reach extends beyond Plymouth through touring productions, digital projects, and national partnerships.

What is your most popular performance, event, or service, and why do you think it resonates so strongly with your audience?

Our ReBels young artists’ programme is hugely popular because it gives young people a voice, professional opportunities, and a platform to showcase their talent. Additionally, Barbican Theatre has a strong specialism in music, offering live performances and opportunities for emerging musicians to develop their skills. We are about to expand our music provision thanks to funding from Youth Music Trust's Catalyser Fund, which will enable us to support even more young artists in exploring, creating, and performing music. This investment will enhance our commitment to providing accessible, high-quality creative opportunities for the next generation.

What would you say is the most rewarding part of contributing to Plymouth’s arts and culture scene?

Seeing the transformative impact of the arts – whether it's a young person finding confidence, an emerging artist taking their next step into developing new work which we help facilitate, or a community coming together through creativity.  We have worked with so many individuals and groups over the years and they each have their own person story to share.

What new and exciting things are in store?

We’ve officially reopened the Quad Theatre at Plymouth Marjon University, expanding our capacity for bigger performances, commercial events, and community-driven projects.

On top of that we’ve also launched this year’s ReBels Young Company production. The Young Company is a year-long creative development initiative, specifically designed for early-career creatives aged 18-25 who are seeking their first job in the arts. ReBels Young Company provides a pathway to overcome barriers that so often deter young people from pursuing their dreams. Participants receive tailored training and mentorship, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to produce work of a high, professional quality ReBels Young Company is more than just a training programme – it’s a transformative experience. It offers a risk-free environment where young people can experiment, create, and learn. Here, they gain practical skills, expand their professional networks, and, crucially, earn a living while doing so.  This year we saw an 85% increase in applications to both the cast and creative team, demonstrating the demand for initiatives like this.

To ensure this programme continues supporting young people for years to come, we are actively seeking sponsors and funding partners. Investment in ReBels Young Company is an investment in the next generation of artists and storytellers.

The 2025 ReBels Young Company tour will travel across the country, from Penzance to Newcastle—tickets will be available soon, so keep an eye out!

And what about you? What’s your role?

I came to Barbican Theatre in early 2024, but my connection with the organisation goes back much further. Over the years, I’ve worked on various projects with Barbican Theatre, including a stint 14 years ago! I’ve always felt a deep connection to its mission, so when the opportunity arose to work with the team on a consultancy basis, I jumped at the chance.

Even though I’m freelance, my role is focused on business development, leadership, and sustainability. I work on building partnerships, securing funding, and ensuring Barbican Theatre remains a thriving, forward-thinking arts organisation. It’s a privilege to support the incredible work of our team and help shape the future of the organisation.

When you’re not immersed in culture and creativity, how do you spend your time?

I love exploring Plymouth’s coastline and moorland with the family and our dog - we’re so lucky to live where we live! I also love discovering new theatre and live music and enjoying spending time with my friends and family.

If you could share a coffee or lunch with someone who inspires you, who would it be and why?

Fearne Cotton – I love how she pivoted her career she has a passion for mental well-being, creativity, and her authentic storytelling is truly inspiring. I'd love to chat with her about life and creativity!
