Armada Way works to begin

Date

Plymouth is set to embark on the long-anticipated transformation of Armada Way, a major initiative aimed at creating a greener, safer, and more family-friendly city centre. This project is poised to reinvigorate the heart of Plymouth, benefiting residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

Plymouth City Council's Cabinet has recently approved the construction costs, with the majority of funding coming from external sources, including grants and contributions from developers. Contracts with the construction company are expected to be finalised shortly, with work scheduled to commence on or around 1 October 2024.

The revitalisation will introduce 202 trees—163 of which are newly planted—chosen to thrive in an urban environment. This green upgrade will enhance the city’s visual appeal and provide essential shade. An innovative solar-powered water drainage system will also be installed, designed to support the new plant life and protect Plymouth Sound from pollution.

A highlight of the project is the construction of a large new play area, which aims to attract families to the city centre, promoting increased engagement and activity. This development is expected to not only improve the local environment but also boost Plymouth’s economic vitality by drawing more visitors and fostering greater investment.

Steve Hughes, Chief Executive of the City Centre Company, expressed excitement about the project, noting,

“We are thrilled that work is about to begin on this significant initiative. It opens up new possibilities for hosting events and activities, boosting confidence among businesses, and enhancing the city’s appeal.”

Construction will take place in phases, starting with areas around Beckley Point and the Copthorne Hotel from October 2024 through June 2025. The initial phase will focus on building a new amphitheatre and laying the groundwork for a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDs).

Local businesses will receive support throughout the construction period to minimize disruptions and ensure that access and deliveries remain manageable. This collaborative approach aims to deliver a city centre transformation that all can be proud of.

This project marks a significant step forward in the ongoing regeneration of Plymouth, and updates will be shared as progress continues. Plymouth is committed to creating a vibrant and welcoming space that reflects the city’s aspirations and potential.
