World leading surf forecasting company moves to Plymouth Science Park

The globally recognised surf forecasting site, magicseaweed, is the latest marine technology company to relocate to Plymouth Science Park.

Set up almost two decades ago by two friends passionate about surfing, magicseaweed now analyses oceanographic and meteorological data covering close to 6,000 beaches in 180 countries. This information is communicated to over 4 million users worldwide, allowing them to assess surf conditions up to sixteen days in advance.

Dan Hunter, Senior Operations Manager at magicseaweed, said: “As a company that thrives on technological advancements, it makes sense for us to be based at Plymouth Science Park so that we can be a part of a like-minded business community, and contribute to the innovation that is taking place across the marine, science and technology ecosystem in and around Plymouth.

“We are particularly excited about the close ties the Park has with the University of Plymouth and hope to work with graduates as we expand and grow our business. Of course, we’ll also remain close to weekday surfing spots, so it’s a win-win for the whole team.”

Chair of the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership, Karl Tucker, said: “We’re delighted to welcome new tenants, magicseaweed to One Research Way at Plymouth Science Park. This building is one of the LEP’s Growth Deal funded projects, identified for their strategic importance in generating growth and productivity throughout the Heart of the South West, which covers Devon, Plymouth, Somerset and Torbay. One Research Way received Growth Deal funding of £3m. Magicseaweed will benefit from the state of the art facilities in the building as they work to bring high value jobs to the area, building on the Heart of the South West’s profile as a leading business destination.”

Councillor Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council said: “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome magicseaweed to Plymouth.
