Some of Plymouth’s best new buildings will be in the spotlight at the city’s Abercrombie awards – and the public get to pick their favourite.
Members of the public are being asked to vote for their favourite building or space in the People’s Award, which can be chosen from any one of the buildings or projects to have made the shortlist.
Every three years Plymouth City Council hosts the awards to celebrate the role of architects, designers and building companies in shaping the city.
The awards, which were named after the architect responsible for the plan to rebuild Plymouth after the Blitz, takes a look at a huge range of work from small conversions and projects to transform open spaces to multi-million pound housing or business projects
The Council’s recent refurbishment of Plymouth Market has made the shortlist for the best conversion or conservation project. It is up against the Mount Wise Phase 2 Development, which has seen the former naval site at Devonport transformed with new homes and businesses in an historic setting.
The university’s Marine station at Sutton Harbour is competing against the STEM building, Plymouth City College’s new wing which provide specialist facilities to teach science, technology engineering and mathematics.
Councillor Patrick Nicholson, deputy leader and Cabinet Member for the Planning said: “These awards are a chance to take stock and look at what is happening in the city and to recognise the people and businesses that are helping us create a city with enough homes, business venues as well as attractive spaces that contribute to a great city.”
It’s not just the big, impressive buildings, the awards also recognise the contribution smaller projects can make to an area and the people living nearby.
Urban Buzz, which has helped create wildflower meadows for bees and other pollinators to flourish has been shortlisted as well as Quadrant Quay, which has waterfront garden rooms and using flood defences as informal seating, re-use of historic features, sun loungers and marine planting.
The public have until 23.59 on 29 October to vote from any of the buildings or project on the shortlist and they should vote for the scheme that they feel has had the most positive outcome.
The awards take place on Friday 3 November at the Sherwell Centre.
