New Culture and Tourism ideas emerge at the latest Techstars Startup weekend!

Date

The latest edition of the iMayflower Startup Weekend events got cultural last month as attendees developed new ideas related to culture and tourism.

Over the weekend teams worked on a range of startup ideas, from an immersive tour of Plymouth, to an online network for charities to connect with each other. Organised by the University of Plymouth, as part of iMayflower, and backed by the wider iMayflower consortium and local business community, the event centred on supporting the city’s entrepreneurial community. The judges, who listened to the final pitches and selected a winning team, included Amanda Lumley, from Destination Plymouth, Richard Stevens, from Plymouth City Bus and Hannah Harris, from Plymouth Culture.

The winning team, ‘Safe Cities’, worked on an idea to help women feel safer on the streets. Participant and co-founder of Safe Cities, Kerri said: “It was a great experience and I made so many connections. I’m glad I fully immersed myself, and it was really motivating to work on a subject that seems to resonate with so many people.”

Organiser and Knowledge Exchange Specialist at University of Plymouth, Emily Barrett, explained: “These events are all about creating a space for new ideas to emerge and develop in Plymouth and beyond. It was fantastic to hear the different ideas presented this weekend and to see participants joining us from across the southwest to network, collaborate and grow new ideas together.”

This activity is part of the iMayflower project and has been supported by The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, who fund the Cultural Development Fund, which is administered by Arts Council England.
