Structural Awards 2020

Entries are open to the Structural Awards, the annual celebration of the most outstanding engineering achievements around the world.

This year the entry criteria and categories have been revised in the light of the climate emergency.

The category changes explained:

Every submission should demonstrate sustainability credentials

Submissions to any category should clearly articulate sustainability credentials. Every submission should state the carbon count if possible and demonstrate that the carbon footprint was minimised as far as possible.

New Award for Minimal Intervention

A key element of structural engineering is advising clients not to do anything major to their existing structure, or to intervene in a minimalist manner. We’ve created this category to recognise such highly sustainable approaches. Newquay Harper Footbridge, last year’s winner of the Award for Structural Heritage, was a great example of this minimal approach.

New Award for Zero Carbon

This new award is intended to show that it is possible to design a structure which has a zero-carbon footprint.

Zero-carbon is not easy to achieve, even assuming life-cycle analysis approaches, which is why it’s so important the awards recognise zero-carbon when it is accomplished.
